First Lady Jill Biden expressed gratitude to people who backed her husband just hours after US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that he had withdrew from the contest against Republican Donald Trump due to fears for the future of the nation.
Jill posted on X with her initial response to President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from his reelection campaign: “To those who never wavered, to those who refused to doubt, to those who always believed, my heart is full of gratitude.”
A spokesman for Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign told CNN that the first lady is anticipated to continue serving as a surrogate while on the campaign trail.
Jill Biden has reportedly been the President’s closest advisor and fiercest protector for the last three and a half years, exerting influence from the White House to the campaign.
It said that she attended the President’s speech and that she will shortly leave the White House to travel to Paris, where she will head the US delegation to the Olympics.
After a dismal debate performance on June 27, Biden, 81, rejected weeks of demand from Democrats to resign, claiming at one point that only the “Lord Almighty” could persuade him to do so.
After internal polling indicated he could lose to Trump in November and take other Democrats down with him, he spent days debating over his decision to resign down.
“I’ve determined that passing the torch to the next generation is the wisest course of action. That is how we can effectively bring our country together,” stated Biden.
Without addressing Trump by name, the US President interspersed references to the threat he thinks the election of November 5th will pose to the country throughout his 11-minute speech.
He declared that he was leaving the race in order to help mend the divisions within the Democratic Party and bring Democrats together in pursuit of victory.
